Humboldt Workshop for Avoiding Unconscious Bias in the Hiring Process

Unconscious Bias

Research across multiple disciplines repeatedly demonstrates the prevalence and potential negative impacts of unexamined unconscious bias in our daily lives, our interpersonal relationships, and in institutional policies and processes. The hiring process in institutions of higher education is no exception. Many Humboldt faculty, staff, and administrators will serve on a hiring committee at one time or another. The purpose of this session is for all members of search committees to understand implicit bias, how it manifests, and to identify practical strategies to disrupt it at each stage of the hiring process. The goal of the session is to support Humboldt’s commitment to equitable outcomes reflected in the hiring of more employees that embody equity-minded practices and mirror the intersectional diversity of the student body.
